Project Overview

Project type: New build / Alteration / conversion / Refurb

Material handled: Steel beams & plasterboards

Location: Salisbury Square Redevelopment, London

Project size: 5,500 square metres

Contractor / installer: MACE Ltd & Errigal Group

Liftroller System used: Liftroller floor & e wagon

The Salisbury Square Redevelopment forms part of the wider transformation of the Fleet Street Estate. The project will deliver a state-of-the-art combined court facility alongside the new City of London Police headquarters. The site consists of nine existing buildings, all owned by the City of London Corporation, with a combined footprint of approximately 5,550 sqm.

With sustainability and modern construction practices at the core of the project, Mace required an innovative, efficient approach to material handling and on-site logistics.

The Challenge: Navigating Tight Walkways & Multi-Level Constraints

Loading Bay Below Ground Level

The loading bay sat below ground level within the building, which made it difficult to keep materials clear of live working areas. A 1-metre drop from ground level to the bottom slab created further challenges, as operatives often needed to unload materials manually down a ladder — increasing both risk and time on site.

Narrow Walkways & Access Routes

Narrow walkways throughout the building restricted movement and made it difficult to transport materials efficiently across the site.

Manual Handling Risk

Heavy materials combined with awkward access points significantly increased manual handling exposure — a key risk Mace actively sought to eliminate.

Liftroller’s Solution: Liftroller Floor & E-Wagon Deployment

To overcome these challenges, Liftroller supplied and installed a Liftroller Floor system and E-Wagon, creating a smooth and controlled transition for materials from ground level to the internal below-ground loading bay.

Our team installed the Liftroller Floor and integrated it directly with the existing scaffold and pedestrian routes on site. Once installed, operatives loaded materials such as drylining, steel beams and breeze blocks onto the Liftroller Floor using a pallet truck.

The rollers allowed the team to move materials smoothly along the floor and directly onto the E-Wagon. By raising the E-Wagon to floor height, the team achieved an efficient, level transfer. The integrated roller system made this transition even smoother.

Once materials reached the required position, operatives locked the rollers off and transported the loads safely to the slab edges, placing them neatly onto trestles. This setup allowed teams to access materials quickly and move them as needed throughout the project.

Thanks to its compact design — just 800mm wide — the E-Wagon delivered excellent manoeuvrability, even in the tightest areas of the site.

The result

The Liftroller system delivered a safer, faster and easier logistics solution for the site team. Significantly reducing manual labour and eliminating the need for operatives to manually handle materials down scaffolding.

Improved Operative Safety

The system dramatically reduced manual handling exposure, directly supporting Mace’s goal of “de-risking the lads”.

Increased Efficient Logistics

Material flow between levels became smoother and faster, removing delays caused by narrow access routes.

Significant Productivity Gains in the Basement

With the E-Wagon operating at the lowest level, the team received materials exactly where they needed them.

Optimised Use of Site Space

The E-Wagon enabled controlled placement of materials into tight corners and against walls, previously difficult to access.

Zero Emissions, Forward Thinking Logistics

The Liftroller system operates with zero on-site emissions, supporting Mace’s innovative and sustainability-led approach to construction. This aligned closely with the project’s wider environmental objectives, helping reduce the site’s carbon footprint while improving productivity.
